OSU Cross-Cultural Mentoring Program

The OSU Cross-Cultural Mentoring Program is designed to connect students with faculty/staff from across campus, to create a support network, and to provide a cross-cultural educational experience.

The benefits of the program:

- Cultural Enrichment
- Community Building

Developed in late 2009 by three graduate students; Heather Pearson, Lauren Plaza, and Malinda Shell, the program originated as a College Student Services Administration class assignment and was launched in the Fall 2010 term.

We are looking to recruit students, faculty and staff who are willing to participate in this unique opportunity. Participation would include attending a one-day training, a kick-off dinner during the first week of classes and meeting regularly with a mentor/mentee during the course of the 2011-2012 academic year. There are also professional development opportunities, check-ins, and fun events that mentors and mentees will be encouraged to participate in each term.

It’s Fall Again…

The last time that I posted, I was close to graduating. Well, I am happy to announce that I did graduate with a Masters of Science in College Students Services Administration. I am now working at Oregon State University as the Director of the OSU Cross-Cultural Mentoring Program. This was a program that I created along with two other women when we were graduate students. Hello everyone, this is just a short post to let you know that I not only completed my thesis, I passed my thesis defense last week. I will graduate in June with a Masters of Science degree. In the meantime, I am still finishing up some coursework. Wish me luck!

I am tired. I have been spending the majority of my time writing my thesis. This has been a difficult process as I do not consider myself to be a good writer. I spend many hours editing in order to make sure that my thoughts flow and I still get it wrong some of the time. I hope not this time . I am also working on my demonstration of competencies which has fast become one of my most daunting endeavors. I hope to send in my last revision soon.

It has been a while since I’ve posted. I have started my second year in grad school and I am writing a thesis looking at identity development of students who identify as bi-racial, multi-racial or mixed prior to admittance to Oregon State University and one year afterward and which organizations they join (if any).

I have also started tweeting and skyping!

Well, I have completed my first year of graduate school…I am exhausted! I must say that my undergraduate degree did not prepare me for this experience never the less-I am enjoying it. I have met so many intriguing people especially in academic and student affairs and I truly have a much better understanding of what happens outside of the class room to ensure student success.

Well a new term has started here at OSU. I’m finally getting used to the pace of graduate school; assistanships, internships, projects, studying and the lack of sleep. I’ve made a huge decision to minor in multi-cultural student affairs and write a thesis instead of a portfolio. Well, I’m off to figure out my program of study which must be submitted to the graduate school within the next few weeks.

This is just a short note to stay in touch. I have been deluged with things to do, read and projects now that I’ve started grad school. I am also working as a GTA in the Academic Success Center at OSU as an academic coach, UESP adviser and a peer teacher. That’s it for now
